In Proverbs 23:7 it says: “for as he thinketh in his heart, so is he….” Whatever we think upon eventually becomes who we are. Many years ago the company that I worked for gave a poem entitled “Children Learn What They Live” by Dorothy Law Nolte, when a certain children’s product was purchased. I put the poem in a frame and often looked at it.

It said this: “If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with tolerance, they learn patience. If children live with praise, they learn appreciation. If children live with acceptance, they learn to love. If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal. If children live with sharing, they learn generosity. If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness. If children live with fairness, they learn justice. If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect. If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them. If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

”That poem guided me as a Mother in raising my children. What others say deeply affects us. But, what we say about ourselves also affects us. The scripture says in Proverbs 18:21: “death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” What we hear and speak about ourselves goes deep into our heart. It determines who and what we become. If children only hear the negatives about themselves, it wounds their spirits. Some never recover. They become wounded adults from the wounds inflicted as children. You see, what we think about is what we become.

Are you thinking good positive things about yourself? Are you saying what the word of God says? The scriptures tell us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are not a mistake my friends. You were thought of before you were ever created in your mother’s womb. God had a plan for you even then, and has a plan for you now. You must change the way you think about yourself, and your life will change. If you have been wounded by words, forgive those that have spoken harshly and wounded you. Set them free, and set yourself free at the same time.

Remember words are powerful, they bring death or life. Choose life. God has a good life for you. It is written in His word, and it overrides every negative word ever spoken!
